Tamil Chair at Harvard University
Harvard University has endorsed the idea of a Tamil Chair in their Department of South Asian Studies. The following note, was part of a letter received from Harvard University:
“We are very pleased to convey to you our desire to support the establishment of the first Sangam Professorship in Tamil Studies at Harvard University. We are thrilled to work with the Tamil community towards this shared goal. This effort will require a total commitment of $6 million”.
The above note reflects Harvard University’s commitment to the Tamil Chair, while needing the Tamil community to raise the funds needed for that endowment.
We are a 501 (C) (3) non-profit agency set up to serve Tamil. Our first goal is to endow a Tamil chair at Harvard University. Harvard has approved a Tamil chair for 6 million dollars. American Tamil doctors Janakiraman and Sambamdam have each donated half a million dollars. We seek the support of the Tamil community all over the world to raise the remainiing needed funds. Please help us in this endeavor.
Of all the classical languages of the world, only a few have the distinction of being spoken languages to this day, with a continued rich literary tradition. Tamil is one of them.
Starting with the earliest Sangam literature, Tamil has produced incredible literature to this date. Our Thirukkural is unique. Our Alwars and Nayanmars followed our ancient literary tradition and produced sweet, moving hymns in praise of God. Countless great poets have produced lovely works.
We have inherited a noble language, nurtured by great poets and scholars for over two thousand years. It has thrived even in the face of foreign occupations. We need to honor it. We need to produce modern scholars to teach and research. Setting up a chair at Harvard will be a major achievement toward that goal.
Our board consists of volunteers who have worked for various Tamil causes over the years.
